Mirrors of Imagination

Most sublime among materials and the only one that turns fire into ice, glass has for thousands of years drawn our attention with the same intensity on its infinite possibilities of colouristic and spatial experiences in the interspace of rhe Real and the Imaginary.

Long discovered beauty of light and world of forms reflected on the transparent glass surfaces often stays beyond reach of our mind that oftenas a result contributes to it the characteristic of "different" and "from different world". It is clearly seen in front of the mirror who has been given the varied characteristics of magical and ritual symbolics. Maybe these are the reasons for the fact that only few of the contemporary artists have tried to design mirrors. The works of Josipa Camber deserve our attention even more because she has bravely embraced the challenge of shaping specific and very demanding functional-decorative objects. It is obvious that it does not deal with only part of interiour analogic to the furniture, but with a sort of experimenting with forms including also relativizing their traditional perception of its primal intention. Instead of usual linear and oval mirrors situated in more or less succesfully made frames, in which we are used to see the worlds from the pretty ones to the ones cruel in their reality, the impression in front of these mirrors is totally different experience, when it is hard to distinguish line between decoration and function, expression and reflection, fulness and emptiness, exterior and interior, positive and negative, object and its context, the real and imaginary…

Its silhouettes like metamorphoses of forms are blended into eachother like in a game based on the contrasts of material and texture of crystal glass in the combination with noble wood such as African mahogany and its exotic natural feature corresponds with the names "Ayous" and "Sapeli".Colour and line of stylized motives is from zoomorphic to the birds and swans and griphons resembling to the scene from the medieval bestiary. There are also arabesque floral motives of blossoming flaming forms and antropomorphic features. Their origins are in the authentic reshaping of the world of nature as well as in the search for the organic, fantastic, mystic and instinctive. Therefore it is not without a reason that the most eminent role among them is of the female figures. The line is a symbol of creative act and the glass and wood are its ideal medium.

Linearism has the meaning of omnipresent symbolic. The softness of forms and rounded relief surfaces carefully carved in wood is even more emphasized by colouring in the scale of green and blue to golden brown and orange. The making was preceded by a process in which each stage is equally important: from the original idea and its articulation to the outcome that unites imagination and sensibility with decorativness as well as with specific, ritualized and sensualized interpretation of forms and space.

Combination of glass and wood, metamorphosis of shapes in the mirrors of Josipa Camber make unity whose structure and decorative inventory radiate with sensibility of form and evocative richness. Decorativism in not only a means for gaining superficial effects but comes from the art of forming material in order to make a new unity. In other words: the decoration does not follow the form but is within itself formed at the level of recognizable sign. The basic meaning in this case represents the everlasting fascination with the beauty of nature which is at the same time one of the constants and the greatest challenges of history of design in the twentieth century.
